In honour of the beginning of autumn, I’m sharing a set of pictures about/from Vienna which I last visited during the most glorious autumn you can imagine!
This painting was inspired by the area around St. Charles‘ Church / Karlskirche. As you can see, I was distracted by all the beautiful trees and their stunning colours and also the light.
Vienna is a beautiful city. I really need to return soon <3
The painting is 49 x 64 cm, soft pastels and charcoal on Ingres paper.

This photo happened by chance but reveals quite a bit about how I feel about Vienna, how I feel *in* Vienna 😊 It combines history, art, light, nostalgia, fashion…
These arcades are part of the State Opera and you are looking in the direction of the Ringstraße, the grand boulevard that circles the historic Old Town. It’s all part of the UNESCO world heritage list.
I love walking there and looking at the eclectic historistic buildings – and even more, looking at the people!
Apparently even Sigmund Freud took a daily recreational walk around the Ring.
When it comes to Vienna, I love all the pomp and showmanship! Which makes me wonder about myself, because it is something I loathe about Munich and am very ambivalent about in Paris…
Don’t get me wrong! I adore ‚chic‘ and glamour, a bit of luxury and fashion (and I adore Paris). It’s the pretension and arrogance that I dislike. Maybe that’s why Vienna is different, because there’s always that sense of morbid and self-ironic humour 😉
Concluding my Vienna in autumn excursion 😊
This is one of the sketches from a walk in the park at Schönbrunn Palace. What a glorious afternoon that was!
Incredibly beautiful light. And the colours!
That day I also rediscovered my love for trees…
During this journey I tried water-soluble wax pastels in my travel sketchbook for the first time. As you can see, I was experimenting (and haven’t really stopped since…): this is a mix between a drawing and a painting. Looking back, I’m actually quite pleased with how the water turned out 😍
Btw, palace and gardens are also inscribed on the UNESCO world heritage list – seems to be my theme at the moment 😉
Side note: I wanted to style some pompous hydrangeas for this photo but it was raining so much, that I simply couldn’t bring myself to swim in my garden… That is the reason I decorated with herbs I had in my kitchen.
