New Zealand – Planning a Journey

Katja Schmitt New Zealand Drawing

In eight months (it is April 2017 as I’m starting this post) I will be going on a journey that has been on my bucket list for a long time. My sister and I will travel to New Zealand for a month.

The anticipation is thrilling!

And in order to bridge those eight months, I will spend a lot of time planning. Because that’s – well, not half but – part of the fun!

Calling for recommendations

Will you help me pass the wait?

I’m certain that in the vast travel community, among those people on Facebook, Instagram and elsewhere, there are many who work/live in, or visited New Zealand, and could probably offer a lot of suggestions.

Do you know of a good place to draw the gnarled trees at Slope Point? The coolest café in Wellington? The best view on the hike up to Mt ‚Doom‘?

I won’t bring my painting supplies to NZ (soft pastels are simply too delicate), but I’ll have my sketchbook and camera, so any ‚creative‘ tips – or rather tips for creatives – will be more than welcome.

Maybe you can recommend the tastiest pancakes in all of New Zealand. The most interesting place for bird watching (because my sister is a hobby ornithologist). Or know a guy who knows a girl who has a lovely motel near Motueka.

With the help of our friends, and the ’specifications‘ of our respective bucket lists, we have decided on our travel route (and some activities):

  • Auckland (art gallery, maybe the new Star Wars movie at the IMAX, birdwatching at Muriwai Beach)
  • Bay of Islands
  • Coromandel (Hahei / Cathedral Cove)
  • Matamata / Hobbiton
  • Wai-o-Tapu
  • Taupo
  • Tongariro Alpine Crossing
  • Wellington (Te Papa Tongarewa)
  • [Ferry, Marlborough Sounds]
  • (Pelorus Bridge)
  • (somewhere around) Motueka
  • Abel Tasman National Park, Torrent Bay, Bark Bay
  • Pancake Rocks
  • Hokitika
  • Fox Glacier, Lake Matheson
  • Haast Pass, Blue Pools
  • Wanaka
  • Roys Peak Track
  • Queenstown
  • Milford Sound
  • Catlins, Slope Point
  • Otago Peninsula
  • Moeraki Boulders
  • Mt Cook (Hooker Valley Track)

Share the knowledge, please 🙂

If you have ideas for any of the places and activities above, I hope that you will leave a comment – leave stories or links or images or addresses, whatever comes to mind!

In the meantime, I will be working on this post throughout the year, adding stuff that we decide to do – And afterwards I’ll add a link to the paintings that came into being as a result of this journey. I can’t wait to make New Zealand Travel Art!!

This will be a lot of fun 🙂

I can’t wait to hear from you!! Please, leave your comments below. Thank you so much!
