In the last weeks, I've been cycling along the Rhi

In the last weeks, I've been cycling along the Rhine quite often - and one of the first tours I did in 2016, when I started cycling again, was also along the Rhine: the stage between Bonn and Remagen (there on the right side of the Rhine and back on the left side). I also painted the view of the Drachenfels at that time. 🎨

Two years ago today, I picked up my sketchbook for the first time during my chemotherapy. When the new year started and I knew I had to somehow get through the next five months, I quickly realised that I wouldn't make it without my creativity, my art.

Not only did painting distract me from pain or weakness or fear, it reminded me above all of what makes me *me* - at a time when the rug was pulled out from under me and when I sometimes felt that parts of me were lost in this process of diagnosis, surgery, therapy....

I guess, in this situation, painting, doodling, was my form of 'raging against the dying of the light'.

A lot of things happened to my body during that time that I couldn't really influence, so it gave me great strength to continue being creative in the face of that.

Plus, of course, making and/or seeing art is healthy - so who knows how much my creativity has contributed to my healing?

During my midday walk, an ICE (train) passed me on

During my midday walk, an ICE (train) passed me on its way to Basel.
In such moments I sometimes suddenly realise how much time has passed since many experiences I was lucky enough to have had... It's been about three and a half years since I visited in Basel - and it was about 35 degrees (°C) warmer. It was so hot that I had to fill up my bottle at each of the (fortunately many) drinking water fountains...
I looked at so many things that day that I wrote afterwards: I feel like I had a speed date with a city 😉

Today I continued working on one of the tree-inspi

Today I continued working on one of the tree-inspired paintings I started in 2022.

During the turn of the year, I have been thinking - as one does at that time - about the direction I want to take with my art. My breast cancer and the covid pandemic have upset so many of my plans, and at the same time these experiences have led me to think about very basic, profound issues, such as legacy and purpose.

I looked at my sketches and photos from the last two years. What did I focus on during a time that was very difficult?

Trees. The forest. That was one of the motifs that kept coming up. 🌳

Apparently I'm typically German in that the love of the forest was written into my soul....

120 years ago today Dame Barbara Hepworth was born.
In 2012 I had the great fortune to visit her studio and home in St Ives that became the Barbara Hepworth Museum (part of the Tate St Ives).

When I arrived in St Ives in the morning, there was a fine drizzle over the town, so fine that you could hardly feel it, but so thick that within a few steps you were dripping wet. At the same time, the sea shone a very bright turquoise, as if lit from within.

I went to see Hepworth's Museum at noon, when it had stopped raining but the sculpture garden was still very wet.

I confess that Hepworth's sculptures only work for me *emotionally* in connection with nature. Everything else I have to work out intellectually.
But her life and art have always fascinated me - the connection to the circle of modern artists in Hampstead, the Unit One art movement and her life as a female artist especially at that time in history.

There is a great BBC documentary on "The Art of Cornwall" (written and presented by James Fox) about the artists' colony in St Ives between 1920 and 1960, telling the stories of Kit Wood, Barbara Hepworth, Peter Lanyon, Patrick Heron, Terry Frost, Naum Gabo, Alfred Wallis, Ben Nicholson etc. If you are interested in learning more about this extremely influential group of people and their art, I highly recommend the film.
